Red-Purple Bypass Project

Red-Purple Modernization logo

The Red-Purple Bypass (RPB) Project consists of construction of a new bypass just north of the Belmont station, which went into service November 2021, followed by a Red and Purple line track structure rebuild between Belmont and Newport/Cornelia. The track structure rebuild began in early 2022 with an expected completion in 2025.

The expected benefits include:

  • Smoother more reliable service
  • Fewer delays
  • Relief of chronic overcrowding on the trains and rail platforms
  • Reduced noise at street level
  • A brighter, cleaner, safer and more pleasant pedestrian environment
