$1M in TIF funding to enhance accessibility, customer amenities and employee facilities
The Chicago Transit Board today approved an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Chicago that will provide up to $1.066 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds for comprehensive upgrades to the Division/Austin bus turnaround. The project underscores the ongoing partnership between CTA, the City and local leadership to invest in neighborhood transit infrastructure, while fulfilling CTA’s commitment to providing safe, welcoming and accessible spaces for riders and employees.
“This isn’t just an infrastructure improvement project—it’s an investment into our employees and our riders,” said CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen. “The planned repairs and renovations will enhance accessibility, comfort and the overall rider experience while ensuring this neighborhood transit hub continues to serve the community for years to come.”
Located in City’s 29th Ward on the West Side, the Division/Austin bus turnaround is a vital neighborhood hub. It serves the #70 Division and #91 Austin bus routes, which together provided more than 3.5 million annual rides last year.
Funded through the Austin Commercial Tax Increment Financing District, the upcoming project features several customer- and employee-focused modernizations. Under the agreement approved, the City will reimburse CTA for eligible project costs of up to $1.066 million.
Construction is expected to begin later this year. Work will include replacing the existing canopy, repairing concrete, sidewalks and curbs, upgrading the windbreak and gutters, and renovating the employee restroom. Together, these upgrades will improve the facility’s overall functionality while creating a better workspace for CTA bus personnel.
