Public Encouraged to Participate in Upcoming Community Workshops

The Chicago Transit Authority will conduct a series of community workshops to gather information on the travel patterns of residents of the far South Side and South Suburbs. The workshops are the next step in a comprehensive study of far South Side rail and bus service that is in progress.

The study is similar to recent CTA studies of West Rogers Park and the North Suburbs, the South Lake Shore and North Lake Shore corridors and more recently, the West Side and Near West Suburban corridor that resulted in service enhancements for CTA customers. Customer input along with CTA analysis has been an important part of the process.

The far South Side and South Suburban sub-regional study is a comprehensive, scientific study that includes a review of major traffic generators, other transit connections and demographic and development patterns. For purposes of the study, the boundaries of the sub-regional study are 79th Street on the north, 159th Street on the south, Western Avenue (2400 West) on the west and Lake Michigan and the Indiana state line on the east.

The workshops are designed to complement the data collection and survey analysis currently under way. Sessions will be held during day and evening hours at various South Side locations in an effort to reach out to as many community members as possible. The workshops will take place March 20 ? 29. Those interested in participating should call the workshop hotline at 312-698-5035 to reserve a spot by March 20. Sign language interpretation and Spanish translation is available upon request.

Each session will begin with a brief overview of the far South Side and South Suburban sub-regional study. After the overview, participants will be asked to work in groups to develop suggested service plans. Ideas generated at the workshops will be reviewed and evaluated by CTA staff in conjunction with the sub-regional study. Recommendations that result from the study will also be evaluated for cost.
