Penny Rides and Later Hours Make CTA Best Travel Option for New Year’s Eve

Note: All CTA bus and rail service will operate on regular Saturday and Sunday schedule on December 31 and January 1. Bus and rail service will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule Monday, January 2.

The Chicago Transit Authority will continue its tradition of offering penny rides on New Year's Eve. Riding CTA buses and trains will cost only a penny from 8 p.m. New Year's Eve Saturday, December 31 until 6 a.m. New Year's Day Sunday, January 1.

Additionally, several bus and rail routes will provide later service, making CTA an even more convenient, safe and affordable option.

Bus Service

#4 Cottage Grove (accessible) buses will operate all night between Washington/State and 95th/St. Lawrence, every 15 minutes north of 63rd/Cottage Grove and every 30 minutes south of 63rd.

#6 Jackson Park Express (accessible) buses will operate southbound from downtown until 3 a.m., every 15 minutes. The last northbound trip to downtown will leave 79th/South Shore Drive at 2 a.m.

#20 Madison (accessible) buses will operate throughout the night with more frequent service between Austin and Washington/State. Buses will operate every 15 minutes eastbound from Austin between 12:28 a.m. and 4:48 a.m.; and westbound from Washington/State between 1:10 a.m. and 5:40 a.m.

#29 State (accessible) buses will operate southbound from Navy Pier to 95th/Dan Ryan until 3 a.m. The last northbound bus to Navy Pier will leave 95th at 11:25 p.m.

#65 Grand (accessible) buses will operate westbound from Navy Pier to Grand/Nordica until 3 a.m. The last eastbound bus to Navy Pier will leave Grand/Nordica at 1 a.m. Service will operate every seven to eight minutes east of Sacramento and every 15 minutes west of Sacramento.

#66 Chicago (accessible) buses operate westbound from Navy Pier to Chicago/Austin Avenue until 3 a.m. The last eastbound bus from Austin Avenue to Navy Pier will leave at 11:30 p.m. Regular Night Owl service will operate between State/Washington and Chicago/Pulaski.

#124 Navy Pier (accessible) buses will operate southbound from Navy Pier to the Millennium Park Randolph Street Station, Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Station until 1:30 a.m. The last northbound trip to Navy Pier from Union Station will be at 11:30 p.m.

#151 Sheridan (accessible) buses will operate throughout the evening southbound between Clark/Devon and Union Station. Additionally, northbound #151 buses will operate from Union Station to the Red Line Howard station from 12:20 a.m. until 5:15 a.m. Southbound buses will operate from the Howard station to Union Station from 11:55 p.m. until 4:45 a.m. Owl service will operate every five to 15 minutes south of Foster and every 30 minutes or better north of Foster.

Rail Service

The last trip on all Brown, Orange and Green Line trains will leave downtown at1:30 a.m. from the following downtown stations:

  • Brown Line Washington/Wells
  • Green Line Adams (northbound) and Clinton (southbound)
  • Orange Line Library State/Van Buren
Brown Line trains will operate between Belmont and Kimball until 2:30 a.m.

Purple Line trains will operate from Howard to Linden until 2:30 a.m.

The last trip for the Blue Line trains on the 54/Cermak branch will leave downtown at 1:30 a.m. from Clark/Lake.

Red Line trains and Blue Line Forest Park and O'Hare trains operate 24 hours daily.
