Northbound Red Line Trains This Weekend to be Rerouted to Elevated Tracks from Subway for 4G Wireless Upgrade Project in CTA Tunnels

The CTA today notifies customers that Howard-bound Red Line trains will be rerouted from the subway to the elevated tracks between the Cermak-Chinatown and Fullerton stations this weekend beginning 10 p.m. Friday, February 13 until 6 a.m. Sunday, February 15, as crewscontinue work associated with upgrading the agency’s subway wireless network to 4G services.

During this time, rerouted Howard-bound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Cermak-Chinatown and Fullerton: Roosevelt (elevated), Adams/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Randolph/Wabash, State/Lake, Clark/Lake, Merchandise Mart, Chicago/Franklin, Sedgwick and Armitage. The Merchandise Mart station is available for exit only via stairway (non-accessible) from approximately 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Customer are advised to allow extra travel time. 95th-bound Red Line trains will not be affected and will operate normally in the State Street subway.

To Downtown

Customers traveling downtown via Howard-bound Red Line service can exit at any elevated station along Lake or Wabash. Customers who require access to an elevator will need to exit at Clark/Lake.

From Downtown

Customers in the downtown area can access Howard-bound Red Line trains by walking one block east of State Street and board at any of the elevated stations along Wabash or Lake streets. Those needing access to an elevator will need to board at Clark/Lake.

At North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand

Customers wishing to board a Howard-bound train from the North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand Red Line stations can board a 95th-bound (southbound) train, exit at State/Lake and then make a free transfer (farecard required) to board a Howard-bound Red Line train traveling on the elevated tracks (customers will need to exit the subway and enter the elevated station at one of its State/Lake entrances). Customers traveling on Howard-bound trains wishing to exit at the North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand stations should travel to Fullerton and transfer to a 95th-bound train. 

Similar work is tentatively scheduled for next weekend, which will require Howard-bound Red Line trains to operate on the elevated tracks between the Cermak-Chinatown and Fullerton stations beginning 10 p.m. Friday, February 20 until 6 a.m. Sunday, February 22.
