It’s Summertime in the City and the CTA Provides Convenient and Affordable Service to the Beaches

Direct service to the 31st Street Beach provided weekends/holidays via the #35 31st/35th route

Make it a day at the beach this summer and avoid the hassles of driving by taking the CTA, which provides convenient and affordable weekend and holiday service to area beaches along the #63 63rd, #72 North, #78 Montrose and now the #35 31st/35th bus routes. In addition, summer service is also available to other popular lakefront and downtown attractions via the #10 Museum of Science & Industry, #124 Navy Pier and #130 Museum Campus routes.

Beach Service

Through Labor Day – Monday, September 1— extended bus service is available during the hours beaches are open. Buses will travel to their regular terminals when the beaches are closed. Hours of operation for Chicago beaches vary.

NEW – #35 31st/35th

New this year, #35 buses are serving the 31st Street Beach from 9 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. During these hours, buses will run nonstop between Rhodes/33rd Place and the beach. Buses will continue to begin/end at 35th/Cottage Grove early morning and late evenings on weekends and at all times on weekdays. 

#63 63rd

Buses are operating to the 63rd Street Beach at Hayes and Lake Shore Drive on weekends between 9 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Beginning Monday, June 16, weekday beach service will be provided from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The regular terminal is 63rd Street and Stony Island. 

#72 North

Beach service to North Avenue Beach via East LaSalle Drive is currently available on weekends from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Beginning Monday, June 16, weekday beach service will be provided from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Customers can board the #72 beach shuttle at North and Clark.

#78 Montrose

Buses are providing service to the Montrose Avenue Beach only on weekends from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The regular terminal is Montrose and Marine.

A number of CTA bus routes provide service within walking distance to many local Chicago beaches. Montrose Avenue Beach is within walking distance of the #81 Lawrence route that terminates at Wilson and Marine and the #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express.

Oak Street, North Avenue and most other North Side beaches can be reached from buses that operate near the lakefront, such as the #76 Diversey, #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express, #147 Outer Drive Express and #151 Sheridan. Oak Street beach also is within walking distance of #157 Streeterville/Taylor buses (weekdays only), the #66 Chicago, #3 King Drive and #10 Museum of Science & Industry routes.

Foster Avenue Beach can be reached via the #92 Foster, #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express, #147 Outer Drive Express and #151 Sheridan buses.

Hollywood Beach can be reached via the #84 Peterson, #147 Outer Drive Express and #151 Sheridan buses.

Loyola Beach can be reached via the #96 Lunt (weekdays only), #147 Outer Drive Express and #155 Devon buses.

57th Street Beach is near CTA’s terminal for #10 Museum of Science & Industry and #55 Garfield buses at the Museum of Science & Industry. The 57th Street Beach also can be reached via #6 Jackson Park Express buses.

12th Street Beach, adjacent to the Adler Planetarium, can be reached from #130 Museum Campus and the #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express buses.

Rainbow Beach can be reached by the #6 Jackson Park Express and the #71 71st/South Shore, #75 74th/75th and #79 79th routes.

Calumet Park Beach can be reached by the #30 South Chicago route.

Ohio Street Beach and Navy Pier can be reached from #29 State, #65 Grand, #66 Chicago and #124 Navy Pier buses.

Other Summer Bus Services

Also continuing through Labor Day, a summer service schedule is in effect along the following three routes:

  • #10 Museum of Science & Industry: to accommodate expanded museum hours, #10 buses are operating later, approximately every 30 minutes on weekdays and weekends.
  • #124 Navy Pier: service hours are extended until midnight.
  • #130 Museum Campus: service along the #130 route is available on weekdays, weekends and holidays from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Buses travel in both directions between the Ogilvie Transportation Center and Union Station to the Museum Campus.
