INSTALLATION OF NEW CTA STRUCTURE POSTPONED

Work rescheduled for next week

Because of the threat of weekend thunderstorms and lightning, the Chicago Department of Transportation has postponed the installation of a new elevated CTA train structure at Wacker Drive and Wells Street.

The project was scheduled to begin late Friday, May 10, and be completed prior to Monday morning's rush hour.

But weather forecasts calling for storms and lightning prompted CDOT officials to cancel the work.

'safety is the number one concern when performing work of this nature, and we feel it is best to postpone the job," said CDOT Commissioner Miguel d?Escoto.

The work has been rescheduled for next weekend, Friday May 17, through Monday, May 20. Brown Line service into and out of the Loop will be interrupted over the weekend, and Wells Street will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The project involves replacing more than 150 feet of track structure. The biggest part of the job involves moving a new, 425-ton center structure into place just south of the Wells Street bridge. The 111-foot-long, 25-foot-high center structure will be rolled into place on a special hydraulic carrier system.

Crews will work for more than 50 hours straight to complete the project prior to the Monday morning rush.
