05/24/00

Additional CTA service to Navy Pier will be provided on weekends and holidays, starting Friday, May 26, on #124 Navy Pier Express buses from Union Station and the Ogilvie Transportation Center (North Western Station).

The extra service is part of a continuing effort to serve an expanding market, and was one of many service enhancements approved by the CTA Board at its May meeting, including extended hours for #6 Jeffery Express service to downtown, and keeping Loop 'L' stations open at all times trains are operating. Among dozens of other improvements made over the past two years are the establishment of express bus service on Western and Cermak, and the extension of seasonal bus service to the 63rd Street and North Avenue beaches.

With more than 8 million visitors annually, Navy Pier has become Chicago's most popular attraction. The pier is regularly served by CTA's #29 State, #56 Milwaukee, #65 Grand and #66 Chicago buses, which operate into the downtown area daily from the South, West and Northwest Sides.

Weekend service on fully accessible #124 Express buses will allow Metra riders fast, direct trips to Navy Pier, encouraging use of public transportation and reducing traffic congestion in the area. #124 buses will continue to serve Navy Pier on weekends until Labor Day, Monday, September 4.

Buses on the #124 Navy Pier Express route begin their trips from Union Station northbound on Canal at Adams. They then stop on Canal for Ogilvie Center at both Madison and Washington before running express to Navy Pier. #124 buses will run every 15 minutes, starting from Union Station at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays, and at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The last bus will leave Navy Pier for return trips to the stations at midnight each night.

Beginning Saturday, May 27, and continuing through Labor Day, Monday, September 4, #10 Museum of Science & Industry buses will resume daily service to the museum at 57th and Lake Shore Drive. Weekend and holiday service operates year-round, except on Christmas Day. The first buses enter Michigan southbound at Chicago at about 9 a.m. and the last buses leave the museum for trips north during the summer at 6:10 p.m. Downtown, the buses operate on State between Wacker and Congress. The buses run every 20 minutes on weekends and holidays, and every 30 minutes on weekdays.
