Events Affecting CTA Service Beginning Weekend of August 3 – August 5

Overnight Single Track in Effect on Blue Line O'Hare Branch
This weekend CTA Blue Line trains on the O'Hare branch of the Blue Line will share a single track between Grand and Division from 12 a.m. (midnight Friday) to 9 a.m. Saturday morning and again from 12 a.m. (midnight Saturday) to 9 a.m. Sunday, August 5. Northbound customers boarding at Grand, Chicago and Division should board on the southbound side of the platform.

The work is part of an aggressive new plan to eliminate slow zones. CTA is replacing deteriorated wooden rail ties with concrete rail ties which will eliminate slow zones along the tracks between Grand and Division and restore normal train speed to 55 mph.

Weeknights through August 31, single tracks will typically be in effect from Grand to Division from 8 p.m. each night until
4 a.m. the following morning, Monday night through Friday morning.

Northbound and southbound customers boarding at Grand, Chicago and Division will board trains on the same side of the platform during late night single track work. CTA customers are advised to allow extra travel time.

Late Night Single Track in Effect on Red Line Friday
A single track will be in effect between the Division and Fullerton stations on the Red Line. Northbound customers boarding at North/Clybourn should board on the southbound platform on the following dates and times:

  • 11 p.m. Friday, August 3 until 6 a.m. Saturday,
    August 4
  • 11 p.m. Saturday, August 4 until 8 a.m. Sunday,
    August 5

Southbound service is not affected.

Jackson Closed for Lollapalooza Festival Over Weekend
Jackson and Balbo are closed between Columbus and Lake Shore Drive for the Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park Friday, August 3 through Sunday, August 5. Buses on the #2 Hyde Park Express, #6 Jackson Park Express, #10 Museum of Science & Industry, #14 Jeffery Express, #26 South Shore Express, #X28 Stony Island Express and #130 Grant Park Treasures routes and #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express will be rerouted to adjacent streets. Customers should allow extra travel time.

Longer trains will operate Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the Blue, Pink, Brown, Green, Red, Purple and Orange lines until midnight to accommodate Lollapalooza fans. Customers taking Red and Blue lines should exit at the Jackson subway stations and those taking the Orange, Brown and Green Line trains should exit at Adams and walk to the concert.

On Saturday, more frequent service will be provided in the evenings on the Blue, Brown, Orange and Red lines. On Sunday, more frequent service will be provided in the evenings on the Brown, Orange and Red lines.

CTA Provides Convenient Service to Bears Family Night
Additional service will be provided on the #12 Roosevelt route beginning at 2:15 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 5 for fans heading to Soldier Field for Bears Family Night.

Later and more frequent service will be provided on the #130 Grant Park Treasures from the Ogilvie Transportation Center beginning at 2:15 p.m. and on the #146 Inner Drive Express southbound from Soldier Field beginning at 3:35 p.m. Both routes will operate until approximately one hour after the fireworks.

On Sunday evening, more frequent service and longer trains will operate on the Brown, Orange and Red lines. Longer trains also will operate on the Blue, Green, Pink and Purple lines.

Downtown Streets Closed for Filming
Portions of LaSalle, Adams, Monroe and Jackson will be closed to traffic due to filming. Fourteen CTA bus routes will be rerouted from 6:30 p.m. each night until 6 a.m. each morning from Thursday, August 2 until Saturday morning, August 4.

#1 Indiana Hyde Park, #7 Harrison, #X28 Stony Island Express, #126 Jackson and #151 Sheridan buses will travel over the regular route to Dearborn then will operate via Dearborn, Madison, Wacker then return to Adams and resume the regular route.

In the reverse direction the routes will operate via Wacker, Washington, Clark then return to Jackson and resume the regular route.

Southbound #14 Jeffery Express and eastbound #60 Blue Island/26th buses will travel on Washington to Clark then will reroute via Monroe to Michigan and resume the regular route.

Eastbound #20 Madison and #X20 Madison Express will travel over the regular route to Clark then will operate via Clark to Monroe to Michigan then resume the regular route.

Northbound #135 Clarendon/LaSalle Express, #136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express, #134 Stockton/LaSalle Express and #156 LaSalle northbound routes will travel over the regular route to Franklin then will operate via Washington to LaSalle and resume the regular route. Southbound #134 and #156 buses will travel over the regular route to Madison then will reroute via Wacker to Adams then resume the regular route.

There is weekend service on the #134, #135 and #136 routes.

Northbound Red Line Trains to Temporarily Reroute Beginning Late Monday Night
Northbound Red Line trains that normally operate through the subway will reroute to the elevated tracks from 9 p.m. to
5 a.m. starting Monday, August 6 through Thursday, August 9.
Weeknights (Monday to Thursday) through November either northbound or southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted to the elevated tracks to allow crews to replace deteriorated wooden rail ties with concrete rail ties and eliminate slow zones from Grand to Clark/Division.

Northbound Red Line trains will operate normally between the Fullerton and Howard stations and between the 95th Street and Cermak/Chinatown stations.

Rerouted northbound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Cermak/Chinatown and Fullerton: Roosevelt/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Randolph/Wabash, State/Lake, Clark/Lake, Merchandise Mart, Chicago/Franklin and Sedgwick. Please note, the Merchandise Mart station is available as an exit only (via stairway) from
1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Southbound Red Line service is not affected.

Customers are asked to allow extra travel time.

Late Night Purple Line Single Track in Effect
A late night single track will be in effect on the Purple Line throughout the week between Central and Linden stations. Southbound customers boarding at Central must board on the northbound side of the platform on the following dates and times:

  • From, 10 p.m. Thursday, August 2 until 4:30 a.m. Friday, August 3
  • From 10 p.m. Sunday, August 5 until 4:30 a.m. Monday, August 6.

A late night single track also will be in effect on the Purple Line throughout next week between the Central and Davis stations. Northbound customers boarding at Foster and Noyes must board on the southbound side of the platform from10 p.m. each night until 4:30 a.m. each morning beginning Monday night, August 6 through Wednesday morning, August 8.

Southbound Red Line Service Temporarily Suspended at Jarvis, Morse and Loyola Stations Late Weeknights
Southbound Red Line trains will temporarily operate on southbound Purple Line tracks at the Jarvis, Morse and Loyola stations. Southbound Red Line trains will be unable to stop at the Jarvis, Morse and Loyola stations due to track maintenance work to eliminate slow zones from 10 p.m. each night until 4:30 each morning beginning, Monday, August 6 through 4:30 a.m. Friday, August 10.

Southbound customers who want to exit at Jarvis, Morse or Loyola should board a northbound train at Granville and ride back to these stations. Southbound customers who want to board at these stations should board a northbound train, exit at Howard and board a southbound train.

CTA customers are advised to allow extra travel time.

Northbound Red Line service is not affected.

Buses Reroute for Railroad Crossing Repairs Next Week
From 9 a.m. Monday, August 6 until 3 p.m. Monday, August 27 repairs on the railroad crossing at 75th and Exchange will necessitate the rerouting of the #71 71st, N5 South Shore Night and #75-74th/75th route buses.

#71 71st street buses will operate in both directions via 75th, Coles, 76th then return to Yates and resume the regular route.

#N5 South Shore Night buses and #75 ? 74th/75th buses will operate in both directions via Yates, 76th, Coles, 75th then resume the regular route.

From 9 a.m. Wednesday, August 8 until 9 p.m. Thursday, August 9 buses along the #55 Garfield route will undergo reroutes due to repairs to the railroad crossing at 55th and Central.

#55 Garfield buses will reroute in both directions via 55th, Kedzie, 59th, Pulaski then return to 55th and resume the regular route.

New Platform at Belmont Station to be Placed into Service
A new platform will go into service at the Belmont Brown/Red/Purple Express station at 10 p.m. Thursday,
August 9 and is located east of the current platform.

Customers should board northbound Red, Brown and Purple Line Express trains on the east side of the new northbound platform.
