IMPORTANT NOTE: CTA bus and rail service will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule Friday, July 3, in commemoration of Independence Day. However, extra service will be added to accommodate riders traveling to and from Grant Park for the fireworks.
On Saturday, July 4, CTA buses and trains will operate on their normal Saturday schedules. Service levels will be increased during the day to accommodate those traveling to and from the Navy Pier fireworks display.
Red Line – Slow Zone Work
Daytime Reroute of Red Line Trains at Sheridan Next Week
A daytime reroute will be in effect for Red Line trains operating in both directions at the Sheridan station from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day beginning Tuesday, July 7 through Friday, July 10, while crews replace deteriorated rail ties, tie plates and spikes.
During these times, northbound and southbound Red Line trains will operate on the Purple Express tracks. Customers at the Sheridan station must board and exit trains from the outer platforms instead of the inner platforms.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Red Line – Other Events Affecting Service
Late Night Southbound Single Track in Effect at the Sox-35th Station
Southbound Red Line trains will be operating on a single track at the Sox-35th station due to track maintenance work from 11 p.m. Thursday, July 2 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
During these times, southbound Red Line customers at the Sox-35th station must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Changes to Grand Red Line Subway Station Entrances
From Friday, July 3 through Sunday, July 5, customers can enter and exit the Grand Red Line subway station from three of the four station entrances: the northeast and northwest stairwells, and the newly re-opened southeast stairwell.
Beginning Monday, July 6, the northwest stairwell will only be available as an emergency exit. Customers will need to use either the southeast or northeast stairwells to access the station.
Closure of the stairwells is due to work associated with the Grand/State Red Line rehabilitation project at the northwest corner of State Street and Grand Avenue
Signs will direct CTA customers to available entrances and exits.
Two-Phase Late Night Single Track between the Sox-35th and Garfield Stations
Due to track maintenance work, a two-phase late night single track will be in effect for southbound Red Line trains between the Sox-35th and Garfield stations from 11 p.m. Sunday, July 5 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
Phase I – Sox-35th to 47th Street
From 11 p.m. Sunday, July 5 until 1 a.m. the following morning, southbound Red Line customers at the Sox-35th station must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
Phase II – Sox-35th to Garfield
From 1 a.m. until 4 a.m. Monday, July 6, southbound Red Line customers at the Sox-35th and 47th Street stations must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Late Night Single Track between the Cermak-Chinatown and 47th Street Stations
As track maintenance continues along the 95th/Dan Ryan branch of the Red Line, southbound Red Line trains will undergo a single track between the Cermak-Chinatown and 47th Street stations from 1 a.m. until 4 a.m. Friday, July 10.
Southbound Red Line customers at the Sox-35th station must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Blue Line – Other Events Affecting Service
NEW: Reverse Boarding in Effect Late Monday Night from UIC-Halsted to Division
Due to crews testing the reverse signaling system in the Dearborn subway, Blue Line trains between the UIC-Halsted and Division stations will be operating in the opposite direction of normal travel from 11 p.m. Monday, July 6 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
During this time, northbound customers at the UIC-Halsted, Clinton, LaSalle, Jackson, Monroe, Washington, Clark/Lake, Grand, Chicago and Division stations must board and exit trains from the southbound side of the platform.
Southbound customers at the Division, Chicago, Grand, Clark/Lake, Washington, Monroe, Jackson, LaSalle, Clinton and UIC-Halsted stations must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform,
CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.

As testing of the reverse signaling system continues, Blue Line trains will be operating in the opposite direction of travel between the Jefferson Park and Addison stations from 11 p.m. Tuesday, July 7 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
Northbound customers at the Irving Park and Montrose stations must board and exit trains from the southbound side of the platform.
Southbound customers at the Montrose and Irving Park stations must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Trains Undergo Late Night Single Track in the Dearborn Subway Next Week
Due to signal upgrade work, southbound Blue Line trains will undergo a late night single track between the Grand and LaSalle stations from 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 8 until 4 a.m. the following morning and then again from 10 p.m. Thursday, July 9 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
During these times, southbound Blue Line customers at the Clark/Lake, Washington, Monroe and Jackson stations must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
Bus and Rail Service for Upcoming Events
IMPORTANT NOTE: Bicycles are not allowed on trains Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. Also, as a courtesy to other customers, strollers must be folded on CTA buses and trains.
Additional Service Provided for July 3rd and July 4th Fireworks Displays
CTA personnel, volunteers and signage will be abundant throughout the Loop to assist riders for the July 3 fireworks at Grant Park and for the July 4 fireworks at Navy Pier. Additional bus and rail service will be provided on both evenings.
To speed travel and reduce lines, customers are encouraged to buy farecards in advance with sufficient value or to add enough value to their existing farecards (either the Chicago Card or magnetic strip Transit Card) for their return trips later in the day.
A map and directions with boarding information also are available on CTA's Web site for customers to print out and take with them to use as a guide.
CTA Bus and Rail Service for the 2009 Taste of Chicago
CTA is encouraging visitors attending the 2009 Taste of Chicago at Grant Park to take public transportation to the event. CTA will have extensive bus and rail service available to accommodate the crowds expected to attend the festival.
Longer trains will operate into the Loop until late every night, and extra buses will be available toward the close of each evening’s activities.

23rd Ward Patriot Day Parade Detours Buses Thursday Evening
From 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, July 2, three CTA bus routes will be detoured due to the 23rd Ward Patriot Day Parade. The parade will step-off from Linder proceed to Archer then will continue west on Archer to Merrimac, south on Merrimac to 56th Street and disband in the Kennedy High School parking lot.
Southbound #55N 55th/Narragansett buses will travel over the regular route along 55th Street to Austin then will operate via Austin, 58th Street to Narragansett and then resume the regular route. Northbound #55N buses will travel the reverse route.
Southbound #62H Archer/Harlem and #62 Archer buses will operate over their regular routes along Archer to Laramie then will travel via Laramie, 55th Street, Austin, 58th Street, Narragansett to Archer and then will resume their regular routes. Northbound #62H and #62 buses will travel the reverse route.
#97 Skokie Buses Rerouted for Independence Day Parade
On Saturday, July 4 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Oakton Street between Niles Center Road and Kostner will be closed for the Skokie Independence Day Parade.
Westbound #97 Skokie buses will travel over the regular route along Oakton to Kostner then will operate via Kostner, Main to Niles Center Road and then resume the regular route. Eastbound #97 buses will travel the reverse route.
Friends of Barbara McGowan Independence Day Fireworks Reroute #126 Jackson Buses
Jackson Boulevard between Austin and Central will be closed from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 4, for the Friends of Barbara McGowan Independence Day Fireworks display.
Westbound #126 Jackson buses will operate over the regular route along Jackson to Central then will travel via Central, Madison, Austin to Jackson then resume the regular route. Eastbound #126 buses will travel the reverse route.
Ongoing Bus Reroutes
Construction Temporarily Detours #86 Narragansett/Ridgeland Buses
Due to construction work at the northeast corner of South Boulevard and Ridgeland, southbound #86 Narragansett/Ridgeland buses will be temporarily detoured on weekdays only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. until Tuesday, July 7.
Southbound #86 buses will operate over the regular route along Lake Street past Lombard to Austin then will travel via Austin, Washington, Ridgeland to the intersection of Ridgeland/South Boulevard and will make a near side service stop before beginning northbound service. Northbound #86 buses will continue north on Ridgeland over the regular route.
Sewer Repair Work Reroutes #95E 93rd/95th and #N5 South Shore Night Buses
Due to sewer construction work, 93rd Street between Muskegon and Escanaba/Anthony/Exchange will be closed to all traffic until 4 p.m. Friday, July 10.
Eastbound #95E 93rd/95th and northbound #N5 South Shore Night buses will travel over their regular routes along 93rd Street to Colfax then will operate via Colfax, 95th Street, Escanaba to 93rd Street/Anthony/Exchange and then will travel northeast on Exchange over their regular routes. Westbound #95E and southbound #N5 buses will travel the reverse route.
#75 74th/75th Bus Stop Changes
Due to sewer construction work, the eastbound and westbound bus stops at 75th Street/Indiana, served by #75 74th/75th buses, temporarily will be removed from service until 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 13.
Eastbound customers can board and exit #75 buses from the near side stops at 75th Street/Prairie or 75th Street/Michigan.

#60 Blue Island/26th Buses Rerouted Due to Construction
Until Friday, July 17, #60 Blue Island/26th buses operating in both directions will be rerouted due to the closure of Laflin Street between Cermak and 21st Street and the closure of Loomis Street between Cermak and 18th Street. The street closures are due to construction work at the Benito Juarez School campus.
Eastbound #60 Blue Island buses will operate over the regular route along Blue Island to Ashland then will travel via Ashland, 18th Street to Loomis/Blue Island and then resume the regular route along Blue Island. Westbound #60 buses will travel over the regular route along Blue Island past Laflin to 21st Street then will operate via 21st Street, Ashland to Cermak/Blue Island and then resume the regular route along Blue Island.
Buses Detoured Until Early July Due to Division Street Bridge Repairs
The westbound lanes of the Division Street Bridge over the north branch of the Chicago River will be closed to all traffic until late Friday, July 31, due to repair work.
Westbound #70 Division buses will operate over the regular route along Division to Larrabee then will travel via Larrabee to Chicago, Milwaukee, Elston to Division and then resume the regular route. Eastbound #70 buses will travel the regular route.
Southbound #132 Goose Island Express buses will travel over the regular route along Halsted past Division to North Branch then will operate via North Branch, Cherry to Division and then resume the regular route. Northbound #132 buses will travel over the regular route.
Temporary Removal of Bus Stop along the #81 Lawrence Route
Until Friday, August 21, the eastbound far side stop at Lawrence/Oakley, served by #81 Lawrence buses, temporarily will be removed from service due to construction work. Customers can board at the eastbound near side stops at Lawrence/Western or Lawrence/Leavitt.
Buses Rerouted on Saturdays for the Near North Farmer’s Market
From 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday through October 31, Division Street between State and Clark will be closed for the Near North Farmer’s Market.
Southbound #36 Broadway buses will travel over the regular route along Clark past Division to Maple then will operate via Maple to State and then resume the regular route.
Northbound #36 buses will operate over the regular route along State to Elm then will travel via Elm to Clark and then resume the regular route.
Eastbound #70 Division buses will travel over the regular route along Division to Clark and then will operate via Clark, Maple to Dearborn and then resume the regular route. Westbound #70 buses are not affected and will travel over the regular route.
Buses Rerouted Due to Construction on Milwaukee Avenue
Eastbound #81W West Lawrence and northbound #91 Austin buses will be rerouted until Monday, November 30, due to construction on Milwaukee Avenue between Gale and Montrose.
Eastbound #81W West Lawrence and northbound #91 Austin buses will travel over their regular routes to Lawrence/Milwaukee to a far side stop then will continue eastbound on Lawrence to Lipps, heading north on Lipps to enter the Jefferson Park bus terminal.
Westbound #81W and southbound #91 buses are not affected and will travel along their regular routes.
Lane Restrictions near State and Grand Detour #29 State and #65 Grand Buses
Due to lane restrictions associated with the Grand/State Red Line rehabilitation project at the northwest corner of State Street and Grand Avenue, #29 State and #36 Broadway buses will be detoured to adjacent streets. These changes in service are expected to remain in place until April 2010.
Southbound #29 State buses will operate over the regular route along Grand past State to Clark then will travel via Clark, Illinois to State and then resume the regular route. Northbound #29 buses will be able to travel on the remaining open lane along State and will operate over its regular route.
Southbound #36 Broadway buses will travel over the regular route along State to Ontario then will operate via Ontario, Clark, Illinois to State and then resume the regular route. Northbound #36 buses will operate over the regular route along Dearborn past Illinois to Ohio then will travel via Ohio to State and then resume the regular route.
UPDATED: 14 CTA Bus Routes Affected Due to Jackson Viaduct Work
