CTA Will Require All Employees to Receive COVID-19 Vaccination

September 3, 2021

Deadline to be fully-vaccinated is October 25; Requirement is in line with similar policies in place with other government agencies and private corporations

In the latest step to ensure the healthiest environment for its employees and customers, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) today announced that all of its employees will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The CTA joins transit agencies across the country—as well as the City of Chicago, State of Illinois and hundreds of commercial businesses—in requiring its employees to be vaccinated.  All CTA employees must be fully vaccinated by October 25, 2021.

“From the onset of the pandemic, the CTA has been an essential service provider for the City of Chicago, and our number one priority has been and always will be the health and well-being of our employees and customers,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “In order for us to continue safely serving the Chicago area, it is now time for the remainder of our workforce to join the nearly 200 million Americans who are fully-vaccinated to help fight off these variants and protect our loved ones and others who cannot be vaccinated.”

Employees will provide proof of vaccination via the CTA’s internal employee portal, which is used by all personnel for managing their personal and administrative information. The information will be confidential and secure.

Since the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines earlier this year, the CTA has undertaken numerous efforts to encourage all employees to get vaccinated—and was one of the first major transit agencies in the nation, and the first large organization in Chicago, to offer an internal, on-site employee vaccination program beginning in late February.

The CTA also created an internal educational and awareness campaign, featuring digital ads, informational posters and other resources encouraging employees to get vaccinated.

Employees who do not provide proof of vaccination by the October 25 deadline will face discipline in accordance with the CTA disciplinary guidelines.
