CTA To Revitalize Key Track and Interlocking Infrastructure at Loop and Lake Junction This Weekend

October 21, 2026

Temporary suspension will affect Brown, Green, Orange and Pink Line service; shuttle buses will continue connecting customers to rail stations and Loop destinations

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will complete the remaining track renewal and interlocking revitalization at the CTA’s largest junction located at Well and Lake beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday, and finishing at 4 a.m. Monday, which will require temporary changes to Brown, Green, Orange and Pink Line service in the Loop.

The Loop and Lake Junction supports all rail service on the elevated track infrastructure in the Loop. This interlocking is one of the busiest rail interlockings in the nation and requires significant maintenance every ten years to help support safe, reliable service through the Loop and reduce the risk of future service disruptions. This work is a continuation of maintenance work that began in Fall 2025 with a similar closure to revitalize two quadrants of the Loop and Lake Junction.

CTA is leveraging the ongoing closure of Pink and Green Line service due to the Chicago Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Lake Street Bridge replacement to repair the remaining two quadrants of the Loop and Lake Junction.

Customers using the Green and Pink lines should be aware that the weekend service plan will differ from the plan in effect from October 13 – 23 due to the full Loop elevated closure over the weekend. Brown and Orange Line riders traveling into the Loop will also be impacted. Shuttle buses will transport customers around the affected area.
