The Chicago Transit Authority will host a job fair on Saturday, March 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at its Skokie Shop, 3701 W. Oakton. Skokie Shop, the CTA's state-of-the-art rail car heavy maintenance facility, has immediate openings for rail car electricians and building maintenance electricians, carpenters and machinists. Applicants who are hired will work on rail cars, machinery that produces and rebuilds rail cars, body work, body damage, trouble-shooting and rail car defects.
Prospective employees are required to have a minimum of five years experience and bring a resume to the job fair. Representatives from the Skokie Shop and the CTA's personnel department will be on hand to distribute applications and answer any questions pertaining to the positions, benefits and starting salaries. Foremen from each of the shop's areas will also explain the ins and outs of the shop by trade and provide tours of the Skokie Shop.
Although the job fair is primarily for tradespeople, applications will be accepted for other positions within the CTA.
Detailed job descriptions are available on the CTA's website, www.transitchicago.com. Job qualifications for the aforementioned positions are as follows:
- Electricians must possess a thorough working knowledge of electronic and electrical theory, as well as building wiring and electrical circuit installation techniques for lighting, motors and controls;
- Carpenters should have a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of body repair work and be able to perform a variety of duties relative to bus and rail car interior and exterior repair, rebuild and replacement;
- Machinists must be proficient in the use and operation of various machines and hand tools and be able to work on hydraulic, pneumatic, HVAC, electro-mechanical and other systems related to service and non-service equipment.
