CTA RESPONSE TO LOOP POWER LOSS

August 12, 1999
08/12/99

Due to the ComEd power outage in the Loop, the CTA prepared for early rush hour service. Evening bus and rail operators were called into work early and some morning operators were held over to staff the anticipated rush.

In addition, twenty extra CTA buses have been positioned on a stand-by basis in and around the Loop.

Power has been restored at all CTA stations. At points throughout the day, the loss of power has affected fare collection equipment and/or station lighting in the Loop area at the following stations:

Red Line: Madison, Jackson, Harrison, Roosevelt, Chicago.

Blue Line: Madison, Jackson, Clinton, Halsted.

Green Line: Clinton.

Loop: Clark/Lake, Adams/Wabash, Library/State.

Orange/Green: Roosevelt.

The power source for trains was not affected so trains continued throughout the day. However, the ComEd power outage did lead to some delays in both rail and bus operations.

Additional customer assistants were positioned at rail stations to help and direct customers.

During the afternoon, paratransit vehicles were stationed at Jackson/State, Jackson/Dearborn, and Library/State to take disabled customers to other accessible Loop stations.
