CTA Provides Travel Options for Fans Attending Baseball Playoff Games at U.S. Cellular Field

October 3, 2008

The Chicago Transit Authority’s Green and Red Lines provide convenient travel options for fans attending playoff games between the Chicago White Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays at U.S. Cellular Field. Game 3 on Sunday, October 5 begins at 3 p.m. and Game 4 (if needed) begins at 4 p.m. on Monday, October 6.

The accessible Green Line station at 35th-Bronzeville-IIT is a few blocks east of the field and CTA will operate longer trains beginning at approximately at 10 a.m. and following the game for as long as crowds warrant. Fans can walk to the ballpark or transfer to #35 35th buses which stop at the ballpark. Green Line trains operate on the City’s South Side from 63rd/Ashland and East 63rd/Cottage Grove, and Lake and Harlem in Oak Park.

The Red Line provides direct service to Sox-35th station, just steps away from U.S. Cellular Field. CTA will operate more frequent service and longer trains to accommodate fans traveling to and from the game as crowds warrant. Red Line trains operate between Howard and 95th, making stops at the accessible Sox-35th station. Free connections can be made from Purple and Yellow Line trains at Howard, from all elevated lines serving the Loop or from Brown Line trains at Belmont and Fullerton.

CTA recommends customers heading to U.S. Cellular Field via the Red Line allow extra travel time due to three-track operation at the Belmont and Fullerton stations. In addition, be aware that the escalators at the Sox-35th station will be turned off in order to safely accommodate the large number of riders coming in and out of the station. Elevators will be available for customer use.

Customers traveling or connecting through the Loop should remember that the CTA is performing slow zone prevention work this weekend on the Loop elevated tracks. The work necessitates the reroute of Brown, Green, Pink and Orange Line trains as they enter and exit the Loop on Sunday until 4 a.m. Monday morning. Customers should allow extra travel time.

CTA also recommends customers using the Blue Line to allow extra travel time when heading to the ballpark due to construction between the Irving Park and Belmont stations necessitating the use of bus shuttles between the two stations.

U.S. Cellular Field is also served by #35 35th buses that stop at accessible stations at 35th Street on the Green and Orange Lines, in addition to the Red Line. #29 State buses that operate on State Street between the Red Line terminal at 95th Street and Navy Pier provide another nearby travel option.
