The Chicago Transit Authority will open a new parking lot tomorrow, July 9, 1999 to serve customers using the Kedzie Orange Line 'L' Station. Located at 48th Place and Kedzie Avenue, this lot can accommodate 160 cars. Increased CTA rail usage on the Orange Line due to the Stevenson Expressway construction has contributed to the need for the additional "Park and Ride" space.
"'Park and Ride' facilities help us fulfill the CTA mission to link people, jobs, and communities. With parking lots at train stations, customers who may not be able to access a bus route as part of their commute are able to use the CTA rail system for the remainder of their trip," said CTA Chairman Valerie B. Jarrett.
This parking area joins the five parking lots already in use by CTA customers along the Orange Line. Resurfacing, striping, and the installation of new lights took place prior to opening of this Orange Line Station. Parking will cost $1.50 per day. Overnight parking will not be allowed.
CTA President Frank Kruesi said, "We look forward to bringing this additional service to our customers along the Orange Line. Especially during the Stevenson Expressway construction, the new facilities will provide a much needed compliment to the nearly 1,000 spaces already available at other stations."
Orange Line trains offer a convenient alternative to driving downtown from the Southwest side and nearby suburbs. Trips to the Loop from the Orange Line terminal at Midway take less than 35 minutes. Starting weekdays at 4:35 a.m., trains operate every 8 to 12 minutes throughout the day and evening. The last Orange Line train trip around the Loop begins at 11:45 p.m. nightly.
