CTA Extends, Renames Bus Route Connecting Downtown to the Obama Presidential Center

April 8, 2026

#10 Obama Presidential Center/Museum of Science & Industry Express route to provide year-round service

The Chicago Transit Board today approved an extension and addition of year-round service on the #10 route that will reach the new Obama Presidential Center, expected to open in June 2026. The route also will be renamed the #10 Obama Presidential Center/Museum of Science & Industry Express to clearly communicate the new end point of the route and key cultural institutions for customers.

"In the years ahead, the Obama Presidential Center will welcome millions of visitors to the South Side, and I am excited that CTA will play a major role in getting them there reliably," said CTA Acting President Nora Leerhsen. "What may seem like a short extension—just three-quarters of a mile—represents something far greater: a connection between two world-class cultural destinations. With the extension of the #10 route, we’re proudly providing CTA riders with a link that brings together the discovery and innovation of the Griffin Museum of Science & Industry with the culture, community spirit, and civic focus promised by the Obama Presidential Center."

Beginning, Saturday, May 23, the #10 will run express between downtown and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry before continuing south along Stony Island Avenue and connecting streets to the Obama Presidential Center before terminating at Stony Island/63rd Street. The extended #10 route will close a ¾-mile transit gap in bus service between the Griffin Museum of Science & Industry and the Obama Presidential Center.

The #10 route has served as a seasonal route from Water Tower Place to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, providing a connection during peak tourist season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The previous south terminal of the route was at the Griffin Museum of Science & Industry on Museum Drive.

The #10 extension will join a robust set of CTA bus and rail lines as well as Metra Electric District that provide direct access and nearby service to the Obama Presidential Center, including: #2 Hyde Park Express, #6 Jackson Park Express, #15 Jeffery Local, #28 Stony Island, #59 59th/61st and #63 63rd as well as the 59th St.-Univ. Of Chicago and 63rd Street Metra station for the Metra Electric District Line.
