Next spring, CTA customers who use the Red Line Sox/35th Street station will benefit from more than $1.5 million in station upgrades thanks to a contract that was approved today by the Chicago Transit Board.
The work will begin in January in conjunction with a bridge rehabilitation project that is currently underway at 35th Street by the Chicago Department of Transportation. The renovations will include but are not limited to lighting and floor improvements, the installation of a mid-bridge canopy over the crosswalk at 35th Street, a decorative fence and railing system, and an art canopy over the sidewalk. The canopies will be constructed of steel and will incorporate colored art glass.
Chicago Transit Board Chairman Valerie B. Jarrett stated, "These aesthetic improvements will enhance the appearance of the Sox/35th Street station making it a more attractive gateway to the neighborhood, Comiskey Park and the Illinois Institute of Technology nearby. We would like to express our appreciation for the cooperation we have received from the Chicago Department of Transportation on this project."
CTA President Frank Kruesi said, "CTA customers riding to and from this area will soon enjoy a station designed with the comfort and convenience of customers in mind. Through upgraded rail stations, we are focusing on the needs of our customers and reinforcing our commitment to them. We also are sending a message to new customers that the CTA system provides quality service on every front.
On an average weekday, 3,576 customers use the CTA Red Line Sox/35th station.
These improvements will build on upgrades made to the station in 1999-2000. At that time, work performed included a new elevator, stairs, Customer Assistant kiosk, granite flooring in the fare control area, stainless steel barriers, new mechanical, electrical and communication rooms and an employee restroom.
Wheeling-based R. Rudnick & Company will serve as the primary contractor on the project and Namat Construction Company, City Lights and Steen's Painting Contractors have signed on as subcontractors.
