CTA’s Red North Interim Station Improvement Project Begins Next Week

May 26, 2012
Granville station scheduled to temporarily close for up to six weeks

Next week, work associated with the Red North Interim Station Improvement project will commence, resulting in the temporary closure of the Granville station beginning at 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 1, for up to six weeks. Granville is the first of seven stations that will be temporarily closed for several weeks this year while crews perform much-needed capital maintenance work to the stationhouses, platform, adjacent tracks and trackbed and viaduct.

Stations along the north Red Line are some of the oldest on the system, with most being built in the early 1900s and in need of being rebuilt from the ground up. This $86 million project will not only improve the quality and experience for riders and neighbors, it also will provide a life-extension for the seven stations that will last for many years until a more comprehensive reconstruction plan is approved and fully funded.

The work is part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Building a New Chicago program, which is updating infrastructure that's critical to the city -- and includes improvements that will help ensure that CTA continues to serve customers as effectively as possible.

Alternate Service Options for Granville Customers
While the Granville station is temporarily closed, Red Line customers will be directed to use either the nearby Thorndale or Loyola stations, two and three blocks away, respectively. Customers also can board northbound #147 Outer Drive Express buses from Sheridan Road to improve their travel time to the Loyola station.

CTA information specialists will be available at the Granville station to alert customers and answer any service-related questions during the morning and evening rush periods next week – Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1. In addition, signage has been posted at the station and distributed in the surrounding area reminding customers of the upcoming temporary closure.

Impact to Red Line Customers
Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to customers during this rehabilitation project, including scheduling work that will impact Red Line service to overnight or weekends only. Any changes to Red Line service will be posted to the CTA website each week.
