Weekend Work to Affect Parts of Red and Green Line Service

Southbound Red Line trains rerouted from State Street subway to elevated tracks; morning Green Line service suspended between Roosevelt and 35th

The Chicago Transit Authority encourages Red and Green line customers to plan ahead and allow extra travel time this weekend. Beginning Friday night through early Monday morning, southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted from the State Street subway to the elevated tracks between Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown due to scheduled maintenance work. Also, on both Saturday and Sunday mornings, Green Line service will be temporarily suspended between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations due to ongoing station construction work.

Normal Red and Green line service will be provided for the Monday morning rush period service.

Red Line Service

Due to routine subway maintenance work, southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted from the subway to operate on the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown stations beginning 10 p.m. Friday, January 16 and continuing through 4 a.m. Monday, January 19. Northbound Red Line service will not be affected and all northbound trains will serve all stations in the State Street subway.

During this time, rerouted southbound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Fullerton and Cermak-Chinatown: Armitage, Sedgwick, Chicago/Franklin, Merchandise Mart, Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Randolph/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Adams/Wabash and Roosevelt (elevated). The Merchandise Mart station is available for exit only via stairway (non-accessible) from approximately 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

To Downtown

Customers traveling southbound to downtown via Red Line service can exit at any elevated station along Lake or Wabash. Customers who require access to an elevator will need to exit at Clark/Lake.

From Downtown

Customers in the downtown area can access southbound Red Line trains by walking one block east of State Street and board at any of the elevated stations along Wabash or Lake streets. Those needing access to an elevator will need to board at Clark/Lake.

At North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand

Customers who wish to travel southbound from the North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand Red Line stations can board a northbound train and exit at Fullerton to board southbound Red Line trains that will be traveling on elevated tracks. Customers traveling on southbound trains wishing to exit at the North/Clybourn, Clark/Division, Chicago or Grand stations should travel to the State/Lake elevated station and make a free transfer (farecard required) to the Lake Street Red Line subway station to board a northbound Red Line train. 

Green Line Service

Beginning at 1:40 a.m. through 11:40 a.m. Saturday, January 17 and then again during the same time Sunday morning, January 18, Green Line service between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations will be temporarily suspended as crews continue work associated with the construction of the new Cermak-McCormick Place station.

During this time, free bus shuttles will be operate in both directions between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations as well as free transfers back into those rail stations. Customers are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

Weather permitting, work requiring the temporary weekend suspension of rail service between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations is tentatively scheduled to occur beginning
1:40 a.m. Saturday, January 24 through 4 a.m. Monday, January 26.

The future Cermak-McCormick Place station will be accessible to those with disabilities and feature modern amenities such as elevators, bike racks, state-of-the-art security, enclosed boarding platforms and three entrances. Construction of the new $50 million station, which is managed by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), will fill a gap in service between the existing Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations, while also provide access to rail transit for neighborhood residents and businesses including McCormick Place.
