Reminder: Portion of Green Line Service Suspended This Weekend; CTA to Offer Longer Trains for Visitors to the Great Chicago Fire Festival

October 2, 2014

Free bus shuttle service and free transfers back into Roosevelt, 35th/IIT stations will be provided during temporary weekend track closure; customers encouraged to allow extra travel time

The CTA reminds customers that station construction work this weekend will require the partial suspension of Green Line service between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations.

Separately, in anticipation of increased crowds attending Saturday’s Great Chicago Fire Festival on the Chicago River, longer Brown and Orange line trains will be provided to accommodate customers.

Green Line Service

To allow crews to hoist and install large structural steel tubing needed to create the elevated tunnel that will cover the tracks and platform area of the new Cermak-McCormick Place station, Green Line service between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations beginning at 2 a.m. Saturday, October 4 and continuing through 4 a.m. Monday, October 6.

During this time, free bus shuttles will be provided between the Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations as well as free transfers back into the affected rail stations to allow customers to resume their trips.

The completed station will fill a major gap in service between the existing Roosevelt and 35th-Bronzeville-IIT stations and will provide much needed access to rapid transit for neighborhood residents and businesses, including McCormick Place. It will feature modern amenities such as elevators, bike racks, state-of-the-art security, enclosed boarding platforms and three entrances. Work on the $50 million construction project began last fall and is managed by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT).

Great Chicago Fire Festival

For customers heading to the Great Chicago Fire Festival on the Chicago River this Saturday, CTA bus and rail service is the most convenient and affordable travel option.

In anticipation of increased passenger loads, the CTA on Saturday will operate longer trains on the Brown and Orange lines beginning at 1 p.m. until 11 p.m.

CTA recommends that customers load transit value or unlimited-ride passes to their Ventra fare cards at rail stations, online or at more than 1,300 local retailers ahead of time or purchase a 1-day unlimited ride Ventra ticket to decrease travel times and avoid having to wait in long lines for the return trip. Customers can also use their personal contactless bank cards to board trains and buses. For more information on how to use Ventra, visit transitchicago.com/ventra.

Customers traveling the Green Line this weekend or taking the CTA to the festival are encouraged to allow extra travel time.
