Late Night Reroutes of Red Line Subway Trains to Elevated Tracks Continues Weeknights

Temporary Weekend Red Line Subway Closure Scheduled for September 21 and 28

Northbound Red Line trains that normally operate through the subway between the Cermak/Chinatown station and the Fullerton station will reroute to the elevated tracks from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 16 and Thursday, September 20.

Rerouted northbound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Cermak/Chinatown and Fullerton: Roosevelt/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Randolph/Wabash, State/Lake, Clark/Lake, Merchandise Mart, Chicago/Franklin and Sedgwick. Please note, the Merchandise Mart station is available as an exit only (via stairway) from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Customers who wish to travel northbound from downtown stations can access northbound Red Line trains at any of the elevated stations along Wabash or Lake streets on the Outer Loop track. Customers who wish to travel northbound from the Grand, Chicago, Clark/Division or North/Clybourn Red Line stations can board a southbound train and exit at Lake to board northbound Red Line trains on the elevated platform at State/Lake.

Northbound customers are asked to allow extra travel time.

Northbound Red Line trains will operate normally between the Fullerton and Howard stations and between the 95th Street and Cermak/Chinatown stations. Southbound Red Line service is not affected.

Southbound Red Line trains that normally operate through the subway between the Fullerton station and the Cermak/Chinatown station will be rerouted from the subway to the elevated tracks from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on three nights next week, Monday, September 17 to Wednesday, September 19 and four nights the following week, Monday, September 24 through Thursday, September 27.

Rerouted southbound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Cermak/Chinatown and Fullerton: Sedgwick, Chicago/Franklin, Merchandise Mart, Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Randolph/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Adams/Wabash and Roosevelt/Wabash. Please note, the Merchandise Mart station is available as an exit only (via stairway) on from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Customers who wish to travel southbound from downtown stations can access southbound Red Line trains at any of the elevated stations along Wabash or Lake streets on the Inner Loop track. Customers who wish to travel southbound from the Grand, Chicago, Clark/Division or North/Clybourn Red Line stations can board a northbound train and exit at Fullerton to board southbound Red Line trains on the southbound platform.

Customers traveling southbound to downtown should exit Red Line trains at any elevated station along Lake or Wabash.

Southbound customers who wish to exit at the Grand, Chicago, Clark/Division or North/Clybourn stations should travel to the Roosevelt station and board a northbound Red Line train.

Southbound customers are asked to allow extra travel time.

Southbound Red Line trains will operate normally between the Howard and Fullerton stations and between the Cermak/Chinatown and 95th Street stations. Northbound Red Line service is not affected.

Weeknights to December either northbound or southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted to the elevated tracks from 9 p.m. each night until 5 a.m. the following morning to allow crews to replace deteriorated wooden rail ties with concrete rail ties and eliminate slow zones from Grand to Clark/Division.

Red Line Subway Trains to Temporarily Reroute to Elevated Tracks Weekend of September 21 and September 28
Service on the Red Line from the North/Clybourn station to Roosevelt will be temporarily suspended in both directions from 11 p.m. Friday, September 21 until 1 a.m. Monday, September 24, and from 11 p.m. Friday, September 28 until 1 a.m. Monday, October 1. North and southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted from the subway to the elevated tracks throughout the weekend. Customers are asked to allow extra travel time.

Red Line trains will operate normally between the Howard and Fullerton stations and between the 95th Street and Cermak/Chinatown stations. Rerouted Red Line trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Roosevelt/Wabash and Fullerton:

Adams/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Randolph/Wabash, State/Lake, Clark/Lake, Merchandise Mart, Chicago/Franklin, Sedgwick and Armitage. Please note, the Merchandise Mart station is available as an exit only (via stairway) on Saturday morning from 12:50 a.m. to 5:10 a.m. and on Sunday morning from 12:50 a.m. to 7:10 a.m.

Red Line trains will resume normal service through the subway at 1 a.m. Monday, September 24, and again the following week at 1 a.m. Monday, October 1.

In addition to running Red Line trains on the elevated tracks, CTA will operate three bus shuttles to help customers make their normal connections. All shuttle service will connect to elevated stations where customers will be able to board northbound and southbound Red Line trains.

Bus shuttle service will operate between the Clark/Division station and North/Clybourn station, stopping at the Sedgwick station where customers may board Red Line trains.

Bus shuttle service also will operate from the Grand/State station to the Chicago/Franklin stations where customers may board Red Line trains.

Additional bus shuttle service will operate between Jackson/State, Harrison/State and Roosevelt/Wabash where customers may board Red Line trains.

Temporarily suspending Red Line subway service from North/Clybourn to Roosevelt will allow construction and maintenance crews to work without train traffic or live rail.
