CTA President Rides Holiday Train to Bring Food to Families in Need

December 4, 2010
Chicago Transit Authority President Richard L. Rodriguez today boarded the CTA’s Holiday Train and distributed food baskets to local community groups—in continuation of an agency tradition. With Santa and his elves in tow, Rodriguez made the deliveries to representatives from several community organizations at the Logan Square Blue Line station.

Every year, CTA employees enthusiastically embrace the spirit of the holidays and donate time and money to purchase the groceries and assemble the food baskets.

Each food basket contains all the ingredients for a complete meal including a canned ham, potatoes, mixed vegetables, muffin mix, macaroni and cheese, fruit cocktail, green beans and corn. This year the CTA is donating approximately 300 food baskets to 16 local community organizations, the deliveries take place on three separate days over the holiday season.

Organizations receiving food baskets today as part of the special delivery are: New Life Community Church, Liberty Christian Center, Humboldt Park Social Services and the Spanish Coalition for Housing. Following the visit at Logan Square, Santa and the Holiday train will continue to the Pink Line’s 18th Street station to deliver food baskets to the Cook County Juvenile Probation Program and Mujeres Latinas en Accion.

Now in its 19th year, the CTA Holiday Train is decorated with thousands of multi-colored lights and features a flatcar in the middle that carries Santa and his reindeer. Car interiors are decked out with bows, garland, red and green lighting and hand poles wrapped to look like candy canes.  Holiday music is played inside, adding to the festive atmosphere.
