Our employees are part of six major lines of business: Maintenance, Infrastructure, Administration, Operations, Law, and Technology.
Our Maintenance team is comprised of Rail Maintenance, Bus Maintenance, and Facility Maintenance. The mission of the CTA Maintenance team is to best serve our customers with professional management and skilled trades performing coordinated maintenance programs designed to increase availability and reduce operating costs through industry leading reliability.
Our Infrastructure Division is composed of three departments - Power & Way Maintenance, Construction, and Engineering - and is responsible for implementation of the capital improvement program and maintenance of all rail infrastructure.
Power & Way Maintenance is responsible for maintaining rail infrastructure, including the track, structure, power, and signal systems. As part of the performance management process, a large focus for Power & Way Maintenance has been minimizing slow zones across the rail system. Replacing or repairing old rails and ties reduces slow zones and makes rail customers' trips quicker, safer, and more comfortable.
The Construction department is responsible for ensuring that major capital construction projects related to CTA track, structure, power, signal, rail stations, and rail and bus maintenance facilities are delivered on time, on budget, and conform with all applicable standards, regulations and requirements.
The Engineering section is responsible for creating and maintaining construction documents for CTA structure, track, traction power, signal, and station projects; identifying CTA utilities, including traction power, water, and gas at CTA locations; locating utilities for CTA contractors; and reviewing and answering design Requests for Information from CTA contractors
Our Administration team supports the daily operations of the Authority. These departments include: Finance, Purchasing, Human Resources, EEO, Diversity, Communications, Safety, and many others.
Our Operations team is committed to providing safe, clean, on-time, courteous, and efficient service. Currently, Bus Operations provides service for 130 bus routes. The service is divided among seven bus garages and our Bus Service Management Department monitors the bus service to ensure that the mission and goals of the Authority are being met on a daily basis. Rail Operations consists of 8 train lines divided among 9 terminals spanning the city and neighboring communities.
Our Law department employs a wide spectrum of practitioners who provide advice and counsel in numerous, specialized areas including, among others, procurement, real estate transactions, construction disputes, labor and employment, ethics requirements and review and negotiation of grant agreements. In addition to its high-caliber transactional attorneys, the Department is fortunate to employ talented litigators who handle commercial disputes as well as lawsuits brought against the CTA for personal injury and property damage, appeals, labor arbitrations, administrative hearings, subrogation matters and workers compensation and discrimination claims. The Department works closely with the client departments to maximize the quality of public transportation for the citizens in the CTA's service area and to minimize the CTA's exposure to financial liability for claims and lawsuits. The Law Department is comprised of the following areas: Office of General Counsel, Compliance, Policy and Appeals, Corporate Law and Litigation, Labor and Employment, and Torts, Workers Compensation, Claims and Subrogation.
Our Technology department delivers innovative, quality and reliable technology solutions that focus on advancing CTA’s mission while connecting its riding public and enhancing their experience.
