Late Night Reroutes of Red Line to Elevated Tracks to Begin Monday

August 9, 2007
08/09/07

Northbound Red Line trains that normally operate through the subway will reroute to the elevated tracks from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, August 13 through Thursday, August 16 and Monday, August 20 through Thursday, August 23. Weeknights (Monday to Thursday) to December either northbound or southbound Red Line trains will be rerouted to the elevated tracks to allow crews to replace deteriorated wooden rail ties with concrete rail ties and eliminate slow zones from Grand to Clark/Division.

Last month the CTA announced an aggressive plan to eliminate slow zones on branches of its two busiest rail lines ? the north branch of the Red Line and the subway portion from Grand to Clark/Division, and the subway portion of the O'Hare branch of the Blue Line.

Northbound Red Line trains will operate normally between the Fullerton and Howard stations and between the 95th Street and Cermak/Chinatown stations. Southbound Red Line service is not affected.

Customers are asked to allow extra travel time.

Rerouted northbound trains will stop at the following elevated stations between Cermak/Chinatown and Fullerton: Roosevelt/Wabash, Adams/Wabash, Madison/Wabash, Randolph/Wabash, State/Lake, Clark/Lake, Merchandise Mart, Chicago/Franklin and Sedgwick. Please note, the Merchandise Mart station is available as an exit only (via stairway) from
1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Customers who wish to travel northbound from downtown stations can access northbound Red Line trains at any of the elevated stations along Wabash or Lake streets on the Outer Loop track. Customers who wish to travel northbound from the Grand, Chicago, Clark/Division or North/Clybourn Red Line stations can board a southbound train and exit at Lake to board northbound Red Line trains on the elevated platform at State/Lake.
