Events Affecting CTA Service Beginning the Weekend of June 26-28

NOTE: All CTA bus and rail service will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule Friday, July 3, in commemoration of Independence Day. However, service levels will increase to accommodate riders traveling to and from Grant Park for the fireworks.

 

Red Line – Slow Zone Work

REVISED: Weekend Reroute of Red Line Trains at Sheridan

This weekend, crews will continue to replace deteriorated rail ties, tie plates and spikes near the Sheridan Red Line station resulting in a daytime reroute of northbound trains and a continuous reroute for southbound trains.
 
Southbound – All Weekend
From 6 a.m. Saturday, June 26 until 6 p.m. Sunday, June 27, southbound Red Line trains will operate on the Purple Express tracks. Southbound Red Line customers at the Sheridan station must board and exit trains from the outer platform instead of the inner platform.
 
Northbound – 6 a.m. –  6 p.m. Each Day
Northbound Red Line trains will be rerouted to operate along the Purple Express tracks from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. During these times, northbound Red Line customers at the Sheridan station must board and exit trains from the outer platform instead of the inner platform.
 
Next Week
From 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day beginning Tuesday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2, a daytime reroute will be in effect for Red Line trains operating in both directions at the Sheridan station.
 
During these times, northbound and southbound Red Line trains will operate on the Purple Express tracks. Customers at the Sheridan station must board and exit trains from the outer platforms instead of the inner platforms.
 
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
 

Red Line – Other Events Affecting Service

Single Track in Effect at the Garfield Station Sunday and Monday Nights

Due to track maintenance, a late night single track will be in effect for southbound Red Line trains at the Garfield station from 11 p.m. Sunday, June 28 until 4 a.m. the following morning and then again from 11 p.m. Monday, June 29 until 4 a.m. the following morning.
 
During these times, southbound Red Line customers at the Garfield station must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
 
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
 

Late Night Southbound Single Track in Effect Next Week at the Sox-35th Station

Southbound Red Line trains will be operating on a single track at the Sox-35th station as track maintenance work continues next week from 11 p.m. each night until 4 a.m. the following morning beginning Tuesday night, June 30 through Friday morning, July 3.
 
During these times, southbound Red Line customers at the Sox-35th station must board and exit trains from the northbound side of the platform.
 
Customers are advised to allow extra travel time. CTA operators will announce the direction of each train.
 

Bus and Rail Service for Upcoming Events

Take CTA to the Taste of Chicago

CTA is encouraging visitors attending the 2009 Taste of Chicago at Grant Park to take public transportation to the event. CTA will have extensive bus and rail service available to accommodate the crowds expected to attend the festival. 
 
Longer trains will operate into the Loop until late every night, and extra buses will be available toward the close of each evening’s activities.
 
On Friday evening, July 3 and Saturday evening, July 4, additional service will be provided for spectators going to Grant Park or Navy Pier for the fireworks displays.
 
To speed travel and reduce lines, customers are encouraged to buy farecards in advance with sufficient value or to add enough value to their existing farecards (either the Chicago Card or magnetic strip Transit Card) for their return trips later in the day. 
 
Bicycles are not allowed on trains Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. Also, as a courtesy to other customers, strollers must be folded on CTA buses and trains.

Catch a Ride on the CTA to U.S. Cellular Field

CTA provides convenient and affordable bus and train service for baseball fans heading to the South Side for the Sox/Cubs series this weekend. The first game of the three-game series begins Friday, June 26 at 3:05 p.m.; Saturday’s game begins at 3:05 p.m.; and Sunday’s game starts at 1:05 p.m.

New/Updated Changes in Bus Service

#79 79th Bus Stop Relocation

Effective immediately, the eastbound far side bus stop at 79th Street/Cottage Grove, served by #79 79th buses, has been relocated to a near side stop.
 

Reinstatement of #95W West 95th Bus Stop

Effective immediately, the westbound near side stop on 95th Street at the east branch of Damen, served by #95W West 95th buses, has been reinstated.
 

Reinstatement of #70 Division Bus Stop

Effective immediately, the temporary eastbound near side bus stop at Division/Lavergne served by #70 Division buses will be returned to a far side bus stop.
 

Chicago Soul Music Festival Detours #X20 Washington/Madison Express Buses

Randolph Street between Ogden and Lake, and Washington Boulevard between Ogden and Ashland will be closed to all traffic until 12:01 a.m. Monday, June 29, due to the Chicago Soul Music Festival.
 
Westbound #X20 Washington/Madison Express buses will operate over the regular route along Randolph to Racine then will travel via Racine, Madison, Ashland to Washington and then resume the regular route.
 
Eastbound #X20 buses will travel over the regular route along Warren to Ashland then will operate via Ashland, Madison, Racine to Washington and then resume the regular route.
 

Halsted Closes for Chicago Pride Fest and Parade This Weekend

Halsted between Addison and Broadway and the CTA bus terminal at Halsted/Waveland will be closed to all traffic until 2 a.m. Sunday, June 28, due to the Chicago Pride Fest and Parade.
 
During set up, northbound #8 Halsted buses will operate along Halsted to Addison then will travel via Addison, Broadway, West Sheridan, Sheridan, Irving Park, Broadway to Waveland for the end of northbound service. Southbound #8 buses will begin service from Broadway/Waveland and will travel via Broadway, Addison to Halsted and then resume the regular route.
 
On Sunday, June 28 from noon until 3:30 p.m. CTA buses will be unable to provide service along the following streets due to The Pride Parade:
 
  • Broadway between Diversey and Irving Park
  • Halsted Street between Fullerton and Waveland
  • Diversey Parkway between Sheffield and Lake Shore Drive
  • Addison Street between Clark and Lake Shore Drive
  • Sheridan Road between Belmont and Fullerton
  • Belmont Avenue between Sheffield and Lake Shore Drive
 
Participants will assemble along the east curb of Halsted between Fullerton and Belmont. The parade steps-off at noon. Buses operating on the #8 Halsted, #36 Broadway, #76 Diversey, #77 Belmont, #151 Sheridan and #152 Addison routes will be rerouted to adjacent streets for the duration of the parade.
 

Rocks Festival Reroutes #78 Buses on Sunday

From 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, June 28, due to the Rocks Festival at Montrose-Wilson Beach, the following lane restrictions will be in effect: Montrose will be one-way street eastbound between Lake Shore Drive and Simonds Drive; Simonds will be one-way northbound between Montrose and Wilson; and Wilson will be one-way westbound between Simonds and Lake Shore Drive.  
 
In addition, eastbound #78 Montrose buses will travel over the regular route along Wilson to Clarendon then will operate via Clarendon, Montrose to Simonds for the end of route and start of westbound service. Westbound #78 buses will continue north on Simonds to Wilson then will operate via Wilson, Marine to Montrose and then resume the regular route.
 

The Race to Taste Run/Walk Detours 11 CTA Bus Routes Sunday Morning

From 4 a.m. until 11 a.m. Sunday, June 28, the westbound lanes of Roosevelt between Columbus and Michigan, and the northbound lanes of Michigan between Roosevelt and Balbo will be closed to all traffic for the Race to Taste Run/Walk.
 
Buses operating along the following routes will be detoured to adjacent streets:
#3 King Drive (northbound only), #4 Cottage Grove (northbound only), #6 Jackson Park Express, #10 Museum of Science & Industry, #12 Roosevelt (eastbound only), #14 Jeffery Express, #18 16th/18th, #126 Jackson #130 Museum Campus, #146 Inner Drive/Michigan Express and #147 Outer Drive Express.
 

#155 Devon Buses Detoured Sunday for the Hare Krishna Parade

Devon between Western and Mozart will be closed to all traffic from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29, for the Hare Krishna Parade.
 
Westbound #155 Devon buses will travel over the regular route along Devon to Ridge then will operate via Ridge, Peterson, California to Devon and then resume the regular route. Eastbound #155 buses will travel the reverse route.
 

Bus Stop Changes Effective Monday

With the start of service on Monday, June 29, the following bus stop changes will go into effect along the #9 Ashland, #X9 Ashland Express, #53A South Pulaski and #53AL South Pulaski Limited routes:
 
#9 Ashland and #X9 Ashland Express
The northbound and southbound near side stops at Ashland/47th Street will be relocated to a far side stop.
 
#9 Ashland
  • Ashland/45th Street: the northbound near side stop will be relocated to a far side stop.
  • Ashland/44th Street: the northbound near side stop will be relocated to a far side stop.
  • Ashland/42nd Street: the northbound near side stop at the T-intersection will be relocated to a far side stop.
  • Ashland/33rd Street: the northbound near side stop will be relocated to a far side stop.
 
#53A South Pulaski and #53AL South Pulaski Limited
The southbound near side stop at Pulaski/47th Street will be relocated to a far side stop.
 

Bus Stop Changes Effective Tuesday

On Tuesday, June 30 at the start of service, the following bus stop changes will go into effect along the #9 Ashland, #X9 Ashland Express and #74 Fullerton routes:
 
#9 Ashland and #X9 Ashland Express
The southbound near side stop at Ashland/Addison will be relocated to a far side stop.
 
#74 Fullerton
  • The eastbound near side stop at Fullerton/Ashland will be relocated to a far side stop.
  • The westbound near side stop at Fullerton/Southport will be relocated to a far side stop.
 

Ongoing Bus Reroutes

Water Main Work Detours #9 Ashland Buses Through the End of June

Beverly Avenue between 99th Street and 103rd Street will be closed to all traffic until 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, due to water main construction work.
 
Southbound #9 Ashland buses will travel over the regular route along Beverly to 99th Street then will operate via 99th Street to Vincennes and then resume the regular route south of 103rd Street. Northbound #9 buses will travel the reverse route.
 

Westbound #78 Montrose Buses Temporarily Rerouted in June

The westbound lane of Montrose Avenue between Damen and Ashland will be closed to all traffic until 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, due to water main repairs.
 
Westbound #78 Montrose buses will travel over the regular route along Montrose to Ashland then will operate via Ashland, Wilson, Damen to Montrose and then resume the regular route. Eastbound #78 buses will travel over the regular route.
 

Construction Temporarily Detours #86 Narragansett/Ridgeland Buses

Due to construction work at the northeast corner of South Boulevard and Ridgeland, southbound #86 Narragansett/Ridgeland buses will be temporarily detoured on weekdays only between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. until Tuesday, July 7.
 
Southbound #86 buses will operate over the regular route along Lake Street past Lombard to Austin then will travel via Austin, Washington, Ridgeland to the intersection of Ridgeland/South Boulevard and will make a near side service stop before beginning northbound service. Northbound #86 buses will continue north on Ridgeland over the regular route.
 

Sewer Repair Work Reroutes #95E 93rd/95th and #N5 South Shore Night Buses

Due to sewer construction work, 93rd Street between Muskegon and Escanaba/Anthony/Exchange will be closed to all traffic until 4 p.m. Friday, July 10.
 
Eastbound #95E 93rd/95th and northbound #N5 South Shore Night buses will travel over their regular routes along 93rd Street to Colfax then will operate via Colfax, 95th Street, Escanaba to 93rd Street/Anthony/Exchange and then will travel northeast on Exchange over their regular routes. Westbound #95E and southbound #N5 buses will travel the reverse route.
 

#75 74th/75th Bus Stop Changes

Due to sewer construction work, the eastbound and westbound bus stops at 75th Street/Indiana, served by #75 74th/75th buses, temporarily will be removed from service until 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 13.
 
Eastbound customers can board and exit #75 buses from the near side stops at 75th Street/Prairie or 75th Street/Michigan.
 
Westbound customers can board and exit #75 buses from the near side stops at 75th Street/Michigan or 75th Street/Prairie.
 

#60 Blue Island/26th Buses Rerouted Due to Construction

Until Friday, July 17, #60 Blue Island/26th buses operating in both directions will be rerouted due to the closure of Laflin Street between Cermak and 21st Street and the closure of Loomis Street between Cermak and 18th Street. The street closures are due to construction work at the Benito Juarez School campus.
 
Eastbound #60 Blue Island buses will operate over the regular route along Blue Island to Ashland then will travel via Ashland, 18th Street to Loomis/Blue Island and then resume the regular route along Blue Island. Westbound #60 buses will travel over the regular route along Blue Island past Laflin to 21st Street then will operate via 21st Street, Ashland to Cermak/Blue Island and then resume the regular route along Blue Island.
 

Buses Detoured Until Early July Due to Division Street Bridge Repairs

The westbound lanes of the Division Street Bridge over the north branch of the Chicago River will be closed to all traffic until late Friday, July 31, due to repair work.
 
Westbound #70 Division buses will operate over the regular route along Division to Larrabee then will travel via Larrabee to Chicago, Milwaukee, Elston to Division and then resume the regular route. Eastbound #70 buses will travel the regular route.
 
Southbound #132 Goose Island Express buses will travel over the regular route along Halsted past Division to North Branch then will operate via North Branch, Cherry to Division and then resume the regular route. Northbound #132 buses will travel over the regular route.
 

Temporary Removal of Bus Stop along the #81 Lawrence Route

Until Friday, August 21, the eastbound far side stop at Lawrence/Oakley, served by #81 Lawrence buses, temporarily will be removed from service due to construction work. Customers can board at the eastbound near side stops at Lawrence/Western or Lawrence/Leavitt.
 

Buses Rerouted on Saturdays for the Near North Farmer’s Market

From 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday beginning May 16 through October 31, Division Street between State and Clark will be closed for the Near North Farmer’s Market.
 
Southbound #36 Broadway buses will travel over the regular route along Clark past Division to Maple then will operate via Maple to State and then resume the regular route.
 
Northbound #36 buses will operate over the regular route along State to Elm then will travel via Elm to Clark and then resume the regular route.
 
Eastbound #70 Division buses will travel over the regular route along Division to Clark and then will operate via Clark, Maple to Dearborn and then resume the regular route. Westbound #70 buses are not affected and will travel over the regular route. 
 

Buses Rerouted Due to Construction on Milwaukee Avenue

Eastbound #81W West Lawrence and northbound #91 Austin buses will be rerouted until Monday, November 30, due to construction on Milwaukee Avenue between Gale and Montrose.
 
Eastbound #81W West Lawrence and northbound #91 Austin buses will travel over their regular routes to Lawrence/Milwaukee to a far side stop then will continue eastbound on Lawrence to Lipps, heading north on Lipps to enter the Jefferson Park bus terminal. Westbound #81W and southbound #91 buses are not affected and will travel along their regular routes.
 

14 CTA Bus Routes Affected Due to Jackson Viaduct Work

Due to the reconstruction of the Jackson Boulevard viaduct between Canal and Wacker, changes in service along 14 CTA bus routes are expected to remain in place until April 2010. The following CTA bus routes are being rerouted to adjacent streets:
