We're constantly doing work to modernize and improve the buses and trains you ride, the stations you visit, tracks you ride over and the technology that connects you to it.

Current projects

  Red Line Extension The proposed extension would extend the Red Line from 95th/Dan Ryan to 130th Street.   Damen Green Line station See the striking, modern design plans for the new Damen station to be added to the Lake Street 'L'.
  Red & Purple Modernization Rebuilding century-old track structure and stations as part of the largest transit investment in CTA history.   All Stations Accessibility Program We're committed to making our system 100% accessible.
  Electric buses Battery-powered buses provide a cleaner, quieter ride that reduces fuel and emissions.   Your New Blue Big improvements are in store for the more than 80,000 daily riders of the CTA's Blue Line O'Hare branch.
  Forest Park Branch Rebuild Making service along the Blue Line’s Forest Park Branch faster, safer, more reliable and accessible.

Ongoing initiatives

  Better Streets for Buses Plan The City’s first framework plan to improve street infrastructure for public bus service.   Elevator & escalator upgrades We perform continual work to maintain, recondition and upgrade our elevators and escalators.
  Refresh & Renew Our crews are making improvements to nearly 90% of our rail stations.
  On-bus digital displays We're testing screens in buses that give detailed info about your ride to improve the rider experience and enable people to ride with greater confidence.
  Slow zone elimination Learn about work we're doing to renovate and fix tracks to eliminate conditional slow zones and speed.

Completed projects

  Garfield Gateway A project to rehabilitate the Garfield Green Line station & serve as a catalyst for community development.   Wilson station renovation We renovated the Wilson station to make it a stop for Red Line & Purple Line Express service.   Cermak-McCormick Place A new, modern, accessible station at Cermak-McCormick Place on the Green Line.   More Track Renewal Learn about a range of other recent track renewal projects.
  95th/Dan Ryan renovation We renovated and expanded the 95th/Dan Ryan bus & Red Line terminals.   Quincy improvements A $18.2 million renovation to the Quincy station preserved its history while making it accessible.   New Washington/Wabash A new, modern, accessible station at Washington/Wabash on the Loop 'L' replaced two old ones.   Red South Reconstruction We replaced the Dan Ryan Line's tracks, speeding up South Side Red Line service.
  #31 31st pilot Piloting new bus service along the along the eastern portion of the 31st Street corridor.   IMD renovation We've renovated the Illinois Medical District station and made it more accessible.   Clark/Division Renovation We & CDOT have done a complete, accessible renovation of the Clark/Division station.   Loop Track Renewal We did major work to renovate Loop tracks and junctions to improve travel times & service reliability.
  Prepaid boarding pilots With prepaid boarding, you no longer need to wait in line to pay your fare onboard the bus.   Loop Link A modern transportation upgrade on Washington, Madison, Clinton and Canal for faster buses.   4G LTE Wireless We have the largest subway system with LTE coverage through our stations, tubes & tunnels.   More Station Projects Find info on a range of new station and station renovation projects we've recently done.
