New, original public artwork coming to new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr stations opening next year!

On April 8, 2024, the CTA unveiled the new artwork for the four new Red Line stations that are being fully reconstructed as a part of the historic $2.1 billion Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One project.

Featuring eye-catching, colorful designs that reflect the local neighborhoods around the stations, the unique works of art were created for the new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr stations by five award-winning artists hired by CTA following a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. The new artwork is an expansion of CTA’s growing artwork collection that enhances the overall transit experience and adds unique elements representative of the communities CTA serves.

The artwork will be installed in the new stationhouses, which are expected to open in late 2025. The new stations will be fully accessible with elevators and escalators, wider platforms, new "Train Tracker" digital screens and other signage and amenities.

Upcoming N Clark and W Roscoe closure from 2/9 thru 3/30

Starting late evening on Friday, Feb. 9 to Saturday, March 30, 2024, N Clark, between W Newport & W Buckingham, and W Roscoe between N Sheffield and to just east of the CTA tracks, will be closed to vehicular and bicycle traffic. The sidewalk at the southwest corner of the N Clark/W Roscoe intersection will also be closed.

Our contractor, Walsh-Fluor, will drill foundations, build new columns and perform structural steel beam erection for the new Red and Purple line elevated track structure in this vicinity, which can only be performed with a closure of N Clark and W Roscoe. The contractor will also perform sewer and roadway improvements.

How to get around during this work:
• The #22 Clark Bus will be rerouted to N Halsted between W Barry and W Addison.
• When traveling on W Roscoe, the alley near the CTA tracks, on the south side of the street will remain open at all times.
• Residents on the north side of W Roscoe and south side of W Newport will need to access their alley via the entrances located near N Halsted.

Under 'L' activation community engagement meetings - Jan. 10 and 11, 2024

By removing century-old embankment wall between W Lawrence and W Ardmore Aves, CTA has created unique opportunity to activate new, open space for customers, residents and visitors.

CTA has brought on Site Design Group, a Chicago-based, nationally award-winning landscape architecture, urban design and architecture firm to guide the development of a block-by-block plan to activate new community space under the CTA tracks.

CTA and Site Design will present an overview of how the activation process will work and timeline and will share constraints (i.e. what can’t be done) and examples from other cities.

North Belmont Red-Purple Reconstruction public meeting - Oct. 16, 2023

CTA and Walsh-Fluor held and in-person public meeting at Center on Halsted to address the final major stage of the North Belmont Red-Purple Reconstruction project beginning this fall. This final stage will mark the next major milestone for the RPM project, completing new elevated track structure north of Belmont station and reaching the two-thirds completion point for this section of the project!

"Neighborhood Identifier" public meetings

The Chicago-based creative studio Ink Factory will create original artistic designs for the new Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr stations that identify the neighborhoods and historic districts in the area, including Uptown, Edgewater, Asia on Argyle and the Bryn Mawr Historic District. Ink Factory collected insight from neighbors in the RPM project area about the rich history of the communities, and other ideas or suggestions for the new station artistic features.
