CTA Chairman Valerie B. Jarrett Wednesday announced the appointment of Robert S. Rivkin as CTA General Counsel. The General Counsel is the CTA's chief legal officer.

?Bob Rivkin has broad experience in municipal law and public policy," said Chairman Jarrett, "and we are fortunate to have a person with his background serve as our General Counsel. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Rivkin when we both served the city, and I know he?ll do an excellent job representing the CTA in legal matters."

Since 1998, Rivkin has been a partner in the Chicago firm of Schiff, Hardin & Waite, where he has concentrated in general commercial litigation. He also has substantial experience in municipal law and public policy, as well as commercial arbitration.

From 1994 to 1997, Rivkin was Director of Programs and Policy for the City of Chicago's Law Department, working with the Mayor's Office and city commissioners on legal policy matters, and was responsible for special projects, interdepartmental management initiatives and internal investigations. Previously, he served for five years as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

CTA President Frank Kruesi said, "We rely on the General Counsel's office to ensure that CTA's interests are being served in all areas where legal issues arise. I've known Bob for years and highly respect his counsel. I look forward to having Bob as a member of my management team."

Rivkin received a bachelor of arts degree (magna cum laude) in 1982 from Harvard University, and a law degree in 1987 from Stanford University, where he served as an instructor for a course on race and criminal law. Prior to entering private law practice in 1988, he was a law clerk to the Hon. Joel M. Flaum of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Among other activities, Rivkin serves as part of Business Leaders for Transportation, as a Panel Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Federal Defender Program and on the Executive Committee of the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is also a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago, a Director of Personal PAC, and a member of the Harvard Club of Chicago.

Rivkin and his wife Cindy have three children and live in the Lincoln Park community.

"This is an exciting time at the Chicago Transit Authority and I look forward to helping the CTA Board and management team address the challenges that lie ahead," said newly appointed CTA General Counsel Bob Rivkin.
