As CTA Prepares to Rebuild Bryn Mawr Red Line Station Starting in Spring 2021, the Station’s Escalator Will Be Removed on Feb. 1

January 29, 2021

Bryn Mawr, along with Berwyn, Argyle and Lawrence stations, will be rebuilt as part of the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project; new stations will have elevators and escalators

The escalator to the Bryn Mawr station platform will be closed after the morning rush period on Monday, February 1, ahead of rebuilding the station with three other Red Line stations and century-old track structure as part of the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project.

The 47-year-old escalator must be removed as part of the plan to create a temporary station at Bryn Mawr that will provide CTA customers with access to the Red Line when the original Bryn Mawr station closes for reconstruction this spring. The existing train platform at Bryn Mawr will become part of the temporary station and in order to provide safe and sufficient access to entering and exiting customers, the one-way escalator needs to be replaced with a two-way stairway.

Customers with limited mobility can use the nearest accessible stations, which have elevators and escalators and can be accessed via the #36 Broadway bus, boarding 1/2-block west on Broadway.

  • Granville station, 3/4-mile north
  • Wilson station, 1-1/3 miles south

There are also several bus service alternatives within a few blocks. All CTA buses are fully accessible to customers with disabilities.

  • #36 Broadway bus, service north to Clark/Devon and south to downtown.
  • #136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express (rush periods only), 2-1/2 blocks east on Sheridan Road, provides service north to Devon Avenue and south to downtown
  • #147 Outer Drive Express, 2-1/2 blocks east on Sheridan Road, service north to Howard station and south to downtown
  • #151 Sheridan, 2-1/2 blocks east on Sheridan Road, service north to Devon/Clark and south to downtown

The current Bryn Mawr station, completed in 1922, will be rebuilt into a larger, modern and more comfortable rail station that is fully accessible to all customers and will include elevator and escalator access. The new Bryn Mawr, Berwyn, Argyle and Lawrence stations are expected to open in 2024. For more information about the RPM project, visit transitchicago.com/rpm.
