The Chicago Transit Board today approved a contract amendment to improve lighting in its newest generation of rail cars, the 5000 series, to LEDs, and increase the total order of the new 5000 series currently being manufactured by Bombardier Transit Corp. to 714 cars. To cover the costs of those improvements, CTA will apply a spare parts credit and has agreed to make an accelerated payment to Bombardier.

CTA and Sun-Times to Partner for First Day, Free Rides Program

Chicago Public Schools students will have a free ride on CTA buses and trains on Tuesday, September 4, the first day of the new school year for most CPS students. This is thanks in part to the Chicago Sun-Times sponsorship of the program.

Red Line Track Renewal and Station Improvements Project Notice of Public Comment Period

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is proposing to make transportation improvements by reconstructing 10.2 miles of the Dan Ryan Branch of the CTA's Red Line between the 16th Street subway portal and the 95th Street Terminal. The purpose of the project is to eliminate slow zones and bring this portion of the Red Line to a state of good repair. Improved accessibility at stations along the Dan Ryan will be part of the project.

The work involves removal and replacement of the drainage, sub-ballast, ballast, ties, rail and third rail except in the areas of special track work/crossovers, where there will be limited system work as necessary to ensure connectivity. The special track work areas were reconstructed approximately eight years ago. A limited amount of subgrade excavation will be required as minor adjustments are made to improve the alignment, profile, and ride quality.

Station work includes accessibility upgrades consisting of the installation of elevators at the 55th, 63rd, and 87th Street stations. Routine maintenance will be performed at eight stations (Cermak/Chinatown, Sox/35th, 47th, 55th/Garfield, 63rd, 69th, 79th, and 87th) including painting, lighting, curtain wall repairs, concrete repairs, and cleaning. Upgrades and improvements to the 95th Street Station will be performed as a separate project at a later date.

CTA and the Federal Transit Administration, in accordance with the Federal requirements of 23 CFR 771.119, are hereby notifying the public of the availability of the Environmental Assessment (EA). Copies of the document are available for review at CTA Headquarters, 567 W. Lake Street, Chicago, Illinois 60661. Mayor Emanuel, CTA and CPS Announce Free Fare Card Pilot Program

Mayor Emanuel today announced a new Free Fare Card Pilot program for students in five Chicago public high schools. The Mayor was joined by CTA President Forrest Claypool and Chicago Board of Education Vice President Jesse Ruiz to make the announcement, which is another step the City is taking to support Chicago’s students and ensure they are able to get to school on time and take advantage of the new full school day every day this year.

CTA Announces Initiative to Reduce Crowding, Improve Service, Better Meet Rider Demand

In a major initiative to reduce uncomfortable crowding and meet growing ridership, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is adding bus and train service to high-demand routes across the entire CTA network. The additions to service will reduce the time between trains and buses and lower peak crowd loads by 10 to 15 percent in most cases. Through the first half of 2012, CTA's ridership growth was higher than nearly every other major U.S. transit system. The rail ridership increase was especially high at 6.2 percent—placing CTA’s growth second among major U.S. transit agencies. Bus ridership also showed a jump of more than 3.9 million riders, up 2.6 percent for the year.

Reminder: Argyle Station Undergoes Temporary Closure Beginning Friday Night

CTA Continues to Move Forward with Red Line South Project

In anticipation of the start of next year's Red Line South project, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) held meetings with various community and neighborhood groups including local chambers of commerce, block clubs, faith-based groups and other organizations to answer their questions, listen to their concerns and suggestions. This feedback has been instrumental for CTA as it now begins implementing the plan for the reconstruction project.
