How-to guide:
Looking up bus stop IDs

CTA Bus Tracker can give you estimated arrival times by text message! This uses the “short message service” (SMS) that’s available on most mobile phones, but first you need to know your "stop ID" and what to text.

This new service is a "public beta." That means that everyone's welcome to try it, but we want your feedback to help us make it better.

Let us know what you think of this new service by sending a message to!

Cheat sheet: Print out this page and jot down your favorite stops. (pdf)Where to find your stop ID

We’ve made sure it’s easy to find stop IDs online. Simply jot down the stop IDs and take them with you when you travel for quick reference.

There are three ways to do it:

  1. Find your stop ID and SMS information from within estimated arrivals and maps on
  2. Find your bus stop ID in Google Transit directions
  3. Look up your stop ID in full Bus Stop lists

Important note: Bus stop IDs occasionally change (for example, when a stop is moved), and that it can take a few days for a change to make it to some systems, such as Google.

Bus Stop Sign Pilot Program

Additionally, a pilot program to put information on how to text Bus Tracker at CTA Bus Stops will be instituted soon.
