Six Elevated
Stations:
Due to similarities in
elevated construction, Damen, Western, California, Kedzie,
Central Park and Pulaski have been designed together, while
maintaining station and community identity as part of the
project.

Features of the new
stations include:
- Full
Accessibility: Upon completion, the stations will be
fully accessible to customers with disabilities.
Accessible features include:
- Elevators
- Audio-visual
signs
- Braille

- Island Platform:
The reconstructed stations will have island platforms
(platform between the two tracks, similar to downtown
subway stations). Island platforms have several benefits
over side platforms:

elevators and escalators needed

Waiting Areas: Each bus stop adjacent to a station
entrance will include benches, windbreaks and heaters.
- Showpiece
Canopies: The canopies have been designed with clear
portions to allow for natural light on the platform. The
alternating triangular solid wedges and clear triangular
panels create a dramatic experience.
- Arts Programs:
The CTA has identified opportunities for public art in
the station houses and plazas. A major goal of the
community art program is to create individual station
identity, while fostering community ownership. This
program is being implemented by the Chicago Department of
Cultural Affairs under an intergovernmental agreement
with the CTA.

Damen

Station is eligible for the National Register of Historic
Places.
New Station re-opened
July 22, 2004: The
main entrance is on the west side of Damen Avenue. This
change allows for a direct connection to the #50 Damen bus.
An auxiliary farecard-only entrance remains at Hoyne
Avenue. The historic canopy was salvaged, restored,
and reinstalled on the center platform, near the Hoyne
entrance.

reinstalled, centered over Kedzie Avenue. The historic
station house facade has been restored and incorporated
into the new station. An auxiliary farecard entrance is
located on the east side of Kedzie, offering more convenient bus
transfers.
