Features of the new stations include:

  • Full Accessibility: Upon completion, the stations will be fully accessible to customers with disabilities. Accessible features include:
    • Elevators
    • Audio-visual signs
    • Braille signs
    • Tactile warning edge
    • Accessible turnstile
    • TTY telephones
  • Island Platform: The reconstructed stations will have island platforms (platform between the two tracks, similar to downtown subway stations). Island platforms have several benefits over side platforms:
    • Concentrated platform amenities
    • Reduced number of elevators and escalators needed
  • Platform Amenities:
    • Oversized windbreaks
    • Heaters
    • Benches
    • Leaning bars
    • Information kiosk
  • Designated Bus Waiting Areas: Each bus stop adjacent to a station entrance will include benches, windbreaks and heaters.
  • Showpiece Canopies: The canopies have been designed with clear portions to allow for natural light on the platform. The alternating triangular solid wedges and clear triangular panels create a dramatic experience.
  • Arts Programs: The CTA has identified opportunities for public art in the station houses and plazas. A major goal of the community art program is to create individual station identity, while fostering community ownership. This program is being implemented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs under an intergovernmental agreement with the CTA.
