CTA Reminds Customers of 2009 Fares

12/29/2008

New Fare Structure Goes into Effect January 1

The Chicago Transit Authority today reminded customers of the fare increases that go into effect on January 1. The fare increases are part of the 2009 CTA budget approved by the Chicago Transit Board in November. The budget maintains current service levels.

Cash, Transit Card and Chicago Card fares will increase by $0.25 to $0.50 depending on the fare media used.

A 1-Day Fun pass will increase from $5 to $5.75; a 3-Day pass will increase from $12 to $14; a 7-Day pass will go from $20 to $23; and a 30-Day pass will increase from $75 to $86.

The 2-Day and 5-Day passes will no longer be sold, however current 2-Day and 5-Day pass holders will be able to use the cards until their expiration dates. University Pass (U-Pass) fares will increase by 15 percent for the Fall 2009 term.

Reduced fares will remain the same as 2008 levels so fares will not increase for people with disabilities or students. A complete list of the fare structure is attached.

In addition, effective January 1, Pace will no longer accept CTA’s 1-Day, 3-Day, 7-Day and U-Pass fare media on its system. The CTA and Pace have created a joint 7-Day pass to accommodate those riders who use both CTA and Pace to make their connections from one to the other seamlessly. The pass costs $28 and will be available wherever CTA monthly passes are sold – with the exception of visitor pass machines. The new pass offers the same unlimited rides benefits of CTA’s 7-Day pass.
